Today's writing exercise is a short questionnaire, because I'm curious and want to pry:
1. What's the conflict in your story (you get 20 words!)?
2. Where does your story take place?
3. When is your favorite time of day to write?
4. Who do you imagine as acting your main character?
5. Why #4?
6. How did you choose your main character's name?
1. Magic destroyed MC's home state. Now she thinks it may happen again to her new home.

4. No idea. Someone who can act. Probably a previously unknown actress.
5. I don't pay a huge amount of attention to celebrities, and of the ones I do know, none of them seem to fit her well.
6. It popped into my head when I was writing, and I just went with it. I maintain she chose her own name.

ReplyDelete1. MC finds a monster, but keeps it secret. Now he's in danger.
2. Undisclosed northern village in England - a decent journey from London.
3. Early morning or late evening. Getting up early to enjoy the morning light really appeals to me, and writing as the evening draws in and the stars come out is pretty awesome. Lunchtime = way less productive.
4. No actor. I can imagine the book as an animation, though - CORALINE style, or CORPSE BRIDE.
5. There are a lot of dreams / secondary stories, and it would be a great format to show the different worlds.
6. Stole it from an older story, which itself just took a childhood neighbour's name! Although, if I count the monster as the main character, then I'm not sure. In its present state it's an adaption suggested by my agent to help the book sell...
Why do I get the mental image of a kid hiding a monster in his closet from his parents??? I'm sure that's not what you meant, but that's what first popped into my head.
DeleteI would like to see more fantasy books adapted with animation. I think it translates well to the genre, and live-action can turn out almost campy if it's not insanely expensive to make. From what story did the name come? Also, interesting that your agent suggested switching the protagonist! I might grill you on that later for the reasons/psychology behind it, if your agent told you.
